The strength and durability of quartz countertops are also prominent advantages. Countertops with a lot of quartz in them can have a rating of 7 out of 10 (diamond has a rating of 10) on the Mohs hardness scale, a test used to grade the scratch resistance of minerals. This hardness makes the countertops difficult to scratch and chip. Quartz countertops are also scratch- and scorch-resistant.

  • Resistance to Scratches. Because quartz is one of nature's hardest minerals, exceeded only by diamond, rubies, and topaz, it is extremely resistant to scratching. However, for dried spills and substances such as gum or nail polish, use of a plastic putty knife is recommended. It is not ordinarily necessary or advisable to use a metal knife to remove the hardened substance from the countertop.
  • Resistance to Heat. Use a hot pad or a trivet to protect the surface from excessive heat. Do not put hot pots or pans directly on the surface. Quartz countertops are heat resistant but should not be subjected to extreme heat, as this can affect the resins which "glue" the quartz particles together..
  • Resistance to Scratching. Use a cutting board, either wood or plastic, when cutting foods with a sharp knife. The countertops are scratch-resistant under normal use but reasonable care should be taken in avoiding marring the finish of the countertop surface.
  • Resistance to Chipping. Do not hit or bang heavy pots and pans or other heavy objects on the quartz countertops. They are chip resistant but not chip or crack proof to extreme abuse.
Take care of your quartz countertop. It will not only preserve the beauty of the countertop, it will also ensure that you will be able to use your quartz countertop for a very long time; perhaps it can even outlast your house.
