Feng Shui and Kitchen...

Designing Your Kitchen the Feng Shui Way

A kitchen serves as the heart of your home. Like the heart of any living being, a healthy heart will take you farther as well as output greater amounts of energy. A kitchen that is in working order invites the family to spend time together, provides a warm atmosphere for the entire house, and serves as the heart and soul of the home.

What is Feng Shui?

Feng shui (pronounced "fung shway") is often called the "Art of Placement," . The ancient art of living in harmony with your environment. The essentials of Feng Shui are two basic principles that all matter and energy in the universe, namely " yin " and " yang ". These forces are opposites, but are not in opposition. Rather they are balancing and need each other to exist and prosper. Feng Shui practitioners say its effects can be felt in the mind, body and spirit in ways that either uplift or diminish one's personal "chi." , or engery. More and more over the past decade, interior decorators and designers have been incorporating feng shui into their work .

According to the principals of Feng Shui, everything can be classified to one, or a combination of 5 types. Commonly called the 5 elements, they are used to describe and classify everything.
Environmental harmony is achieved by balancing the 5 elements. Time is a very important component of a Feng Shui analysis. Everybody knows that nothing remains the same and everything changes. The qualities and strength of the 5 elements change over time as well.

At present the most fortunate element is earth. Earth represents fortune, trust, durability and stability. The use of earth elements in design and decoration is in harmony with the Feng Shui of the time.

The use of natural stone such as granite in your home or business for everything from tiles, decorate pebbles along pathways to water fountains brings these qualities to your environment.

The Five Elements

The 5 elements are water, wood, fire, earth and metal.

WATER - EASE, FRESHNESS AND ABUNDANCE
A harmonious Feng Shui Water element will bring a refreshing energy of calm, ease, purity and freshness.

Water is best represented by real water, but large surface areas of blue or black can vibrate some of the water element.

WOOD - HEALTH AND VITALITY
Lush and healing, the Feng Shui Wood element will bring the energy of health, vitality and growth. It is also an expression of abundance, thus an ancient Feng Shui cure for wealth and prosperity.

Wood is best represented by a live plant, but an entire green wall or green carpeting can also work as the wood element. The color brown also represents wood.

FIRE - PASSION AND HIGH ENERGY
A balanced Feng Shui Fire element in your space will bring a supporting energy in all your career efforts and will help you achieve recognition.

Fire is the one element where using real fire could be dangerous, although a stove or oven positioned in the right location can work as fire literally. Fire is the one element where the color is usually substituted and that is any shade of red.

EARTH - NOURISHMENT AND STABILITY
A strong and harmonious Feng Shui Earth element in your home will help create stability, nourishment and protection for all your relationships.

Earth is best represented by real earthen objects made of stone such as marble or granite. Earth colors range from light to dark tones of yellow, orange or beige.

METAL - CLARITY AND PRECISENESS
Feng Shui Metal element brings the qualities of sharpness, precision, clarity and efficiency; its balanced presence will help you live with clarity and lightness.

Metal is often represented with decor or furnishings made of copper, brass, bronze, iron or steel. Metal colors are gold, silver, white or gray.

Feng shui is all about balance, one element can overpower and cancel another, yet you need different elements to be balanced for a space.

Turquoise, a blue-green combo, evokes the qualities of wood and water. It has both the contemplative qualities of blue and the life of green, making it a great choice for spaces that allow movement and growth.

Lavender, a mix of the qualities of blue and purple, can evoke a sense of calm, spirituality, contemplation and quiet. Use lavender to minimize high activity, calm a stressful situation or create a special spiritual space. Lavender is best not used in spaces where conversation or high activity is encouraged.
